PayU is a mobile and online payment service provider that enables and empowers businesses and individuals in the Middle East and Africa to safely transact and easily participate in the economy. PayU Payment Solutions (Pty) Ltd (“PayU MEA”), headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, is a subsidiary within the Naspers group of companies. The company’s products include a digital wallet and a PCI DSS certified payment gateway.
Mustapha Zaouini, CEO, PayU MEA
Zaouini is a respected business technology entrepreneur and executive in the telecoms, system integration consultancies and mobile money industries.
With over 19 years of experience across a range of demanding roles in business and technology, he is an accomplished executive with a track record of working with high-growth technology companies in Europe and Africa. He brings a unique mix of experience in emerging markets and industry expertise, technical agility and operational skills, and a passion for innovation in mobile commerce.
Zaouini is responsible for driving PayU’s innovation and leadership in enabling the next generation of payment behaviours in the region. His strengths include enterprise leadership, developing organic revenue growth and creating effective partnerships in complex ecosystems.
Zaouini holds an Executive MBA from London Business School.
Johan Dekker, COO
Johan, a nine year veteran of the digital media space, has brought various innovative digital consumer and business applications to market during his career. Having worked in South Africa, the US, India and Thailand, Johan brings a truly global perspective to product development and business strategy. Prior to joining PayU MEA, Johan was a founder member of ibibo.com in the capacity of chief project officer and chief product officer of content products.
In his current role as COO of PayU MEA, Johan leads product development and day-to-day operations of PayU MEA.
Johan started his career as a mechanical design engineer before making the switch to project management and business analyst. He joined the MIH IZone Group in November 2004 as senior project manager before he moved to India to assist with the founding of ibibo.com.
Johan holds a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch and a L.L.B. Bachelor degree in Law from the University of Johannesburg.
Andre Penderis, CTO
Andre has 10 years of senior management experience and has travelled across the globe and worked for many multinationals and start up’s alike. He was also a founding member of MicroFence South Africa. He started as an embedded software engineer and now plays mostly in the online web application space.
In his current role as CTO of PayU, Andre leads and manages PayU MEA’s engineering team to build software systems that deliver real business value.
Andre attended the Pretoria University of Technology in 1990 where he completed his BTech degree in electronic engineering and completed various certifications in software development.
Charles Elliman, Head of Sales
Charles, an e-commerce and online payments specialist with 15 years’ experience, is responsible for standards, technologies and practices for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce models. He has an advanced understanding of all e-commerce, in-store and online payments related tasks, and facilitates complex relationships amongst marketing, promotion, customer service, user interaction, purchasing methods, and secure transactions. In addition to this, Charles oversees site performance, testing and evaluation. Charles has knowledge in the areas of logistics, rewards, NCP transacting, fraud and risk, online web strategy and credit card acquiring.
Jaclyn Strul, CA (SA), Financial Manager
Jaclyn attended the University of Cape Town (UCT) where she completed a Bachelor of Business Science Finance Honours degree as well as receiving Distinction in Management Accounting and Auditing in 2006. She further completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA) in 2007. She then went on to complete her accounting articles at Mazars in Cape Town, where she serviced a wide range of clients in the financial, retail and wholesale industries amongst others. Jaclyn qualified as a CA(SA) charter holder in 2010 with first time passes in both the qualifying examinations.
She spent time in New York working at WeiserMazars, as well as completing level 1 of the CFA Program.
She joined PayU in January 2012 and was promoted to Financial Manager in early 2013.
Johan Strydom, Head of Products
Johan has over 15 years senior executive experience in the online industry. A B.Com LLB graduate who started his career with Unilever both in South Africa and the United Kingdom, he founded South Africa’s first virtual bank in 2000 and in the process developed and patented South Africa’s first non-card e-commerce payment solution. In addition to the online bank, he has headed up multiple online businesses ranging from a financial investment and online trading portal, to South Africa’s largest real estate portal.
Johan is currently the Head of Products at PayU where he is responsible for the development and deployment of a range of payment solutions for all markets in the region.
Lindy Grobler, Marketing Manager
Lindy has over 9 years experience in marketing roles for multinationals and start-ups across multiple sectors, including FMCG/manufacturing, software development and e-commerce. Starting in brand management and product development, Lindy launched innovative bath and body products to the local retail market before taking the reigns as Marketing Manager of KnowledgeTree Inc., a Cape Town based start-up competing with the likes of Microsoft in the international office productivity software market. In this capacity, Lindy’s expertise in product, brand, and corporate marketing played a pivotal role in helping the company secure its first round of VC funding. The organisation has since secured $4.7 million in second round funding.
Lindy is currently the Marketing Manager of PayU, where she is responsible for developing and implementing PayU‘s national B2B and B2C marketing strategy.
